‘To lift or enhance my mood’ was the most common response.

What is your main purpose for using perfume?

(To lift or enhance mood: 39, To impress others: 24, To relax or calm down: 19, To control sweat or body odour: 17, Other: 1)

《To lift or enhance mood》
  • To wear my favourite smell and raise my self-esteem and tension. (Female / 20s / Student / Fukuoka)
  • I use the same perfume that my guesser uses, so even if I don't feel good in the morning, I can smell it and try my best today, or until the next time I meet my guesser. (Female / 20s / Self-employed, freelance / Osaka)
  • The purpose of my perfume is completely ‘to lift my mood’. When I go to work, I use the scent of my favourite perfume to lift my mood and say ‘Okay, I'm going to work hard’. When I study at home, I use a perfume scent (different from the one for work) to improve my concentration. I use my favourite fragrance to change my mind and lift my mood. (Female / 30s / full-time employee / Osaka)
  • I use it to further enhance my mood when I am going somewhere a bit special or having a special experience. When I use it it is also when I want to be more enthusiastic. (Male / 30s / full-time employee / Okayama)
  • Wearing a favourite fragrance gives you confidence and courage, increases your motivation and improves your performance at work. (Female/40s/Permanent employee/Fukushima)
  • I take a quick puff when I go out. This gives me a different change of pace from my private life and makes me feel taller. (Female/40s / housewife / Okayama)
  • One reason is that I like to wear my favourite fragrance, but when other people tell me that I smell good, I feel happy that others think my chosen fragrance smells good too, and it makes me feel better for the rest of the day. (Female/50s / housewife / Ibaraki)
  • I don't usually use perfume, but when I go out in style and use perfume as if I were wearing an accessory, it makes me feel refreshed. (Female/50s/unemployed/ Osaka)

《To impress others》
  • Women who smell good have the image of being careful about their beauty on a daily basis, so I want to be thought of as such and make an effort (Female / 20s / full-time employee / Tokyo)
  • The first impression you make on others is that your smell has the same impact on them as your face, so if they think you smell nice, it will lead to a good impression. (Male / 30s / full-time employee / Saitama)
  • To produce a woman who smells good and look as nice as possible. (Female / 30s / Part-time job / Tokyo)
  • I have learnt from TV that the opposite sex is sensitive to the smell of the other person, so I wear it because I hope it will make them like me a little. It seems to be quite effective and I am often attracted by the smell and feel closer to them. (Male / 30s / self-employed, freelance / Kanagawa)
  • I want to be perceived as a person who smells good, not only by myself but also by others. I want to give the impression of cleanliness. (Female/40s/Permanent employee/Kanagawa)
  • I use perfume because I want to give the impression that I am a person who is always clean, stylish and well-groomed. (Male / 50s / full-time employee / Ibaraki)

《To relax or calm down》
  • I often use it to calm myself down when starting something new, in nervous situations or when I get motion sickness. (Female / 20s / full-time employee / Hokkaido)
  • I like the smell of my mother's old perfume, which I still use myself. Or I buy a fragrance that relaxes me and use it in whatever way I feel like it that day. Sometimes, when I want to calm down, I put a push of it on a handkerchief and carry it with me. (Female / 30s / Self-employed, freelance / Ibaraki)
  • I only wear it so that it does not smell too much on people, although this is also to avoid offending those I come into contact with. I try to give myself a subtle fragrance so that I can feel safe with a smell I like. I get nervous easily, so I focus on the relaxing effect. (Female / 30s / full-time employee / Okayama)
  • I use it to heal myself with my favourite fragrance. (Female/40s/Self-employed, freelance/ Tottori)
  • I can relax by being covered in my favourite smell. (Male / 40s / full-time employee / Osaka)

《To control sweat or body odour》
  • To reduce sweaty odour, as I sweat easily in all seasons (Female / 20s / full-time employee / Yamaguchi)
  • The main purpose is to use perfume as an etiquette measure to prevent the slight smell of one's own body odour on hot days or after exercising or other occasions when one is sweating. (Male / 30s / Part-time worker / Gifu)
  • I have a dog, so I'm concerned that its smell might seep in, and sweat might cause discomfort around me without me realising it, so I want to wear a good fragrance as a precaution. (Female/40s/Permanent employee/Tokyo)
  • Although people around me say I'm fine, I'm starting to feel myself smelling of ageing, so I try to use a few scents that are said to ease the smell of ageing. (Female/40s/Part-time job/ Chiba)
  • Because I am concerned about age-related odour (Male/50s/Permanent employee/Aichi Prefecture)
